Should You Tell Your Boss “I’m Job Hunting.”

I Should Never Have Told My Boss I’m Job Hunting

Dear Liz,

I work for a not-for-profit agency. The agency is going broke. When our Executive Director “Dora” told us that there won’t be any annual pay increases this year, one of my coworkers started crying right in the meeting. We already laid off two people. Now there are only six of us left. It’s a grim situation.

We only have funding through October, so I figured the professional thing to do would be to start job hunting and  tell Dora about it. I told Dora two weeks ago that I’m looking for a new job.

She said, “Of course, I understand, let me know how I can help.” That’s what she said, but her actions have been anything but supportive.

Dora watches me like a hawk now. She never did that before. She notices when I go to lunch and when I come back. I asked her if she wants me to tell her when I have an interview, and she said, “You don’t have to tell me unless it’s going to disrupt your work schedule.” However, her whole attitude toward me has changed. She’s short with me. She’s impatient. She can’t deal with the fact that I’m job hunting.

The idea of an interview disrupting my work schedule is laughable, since I work late almost every night and even work on the weekends. For some reason Dora is really taking my job search personally. She’s super snippy to me now.

The good news is that I’ve had two interviews so far and they both went great. I’m positive I’m going to get invited back for a second interview with one of the two agencies that interviewed me. The other one still has several candidates to interview before they make a decision.

Is there anything I can do to calm Dora down? Her hostile attitude is driving me crazy. I don’t want her to fire me before I get laid off!

Yours,

Rosalee
